Makita Cordless Drills

lithium ion 18v - Purchased in 2008
Rating:

Strengths: great power and light weight. Charges so fast I can't even wear the second battery down before the first is charged again.

Weaknesses: Some of the cosmetics come off after repeated use. IE rubber grips and plastic retainer/glow in the dark ring around tip

What You Wanted to Know Before You Bought It: warrenty is not good

What Would You Tell the Maker of This Tool: make the 1.5 amp batteries interchangeable with the 3.0 amp batts.

18v lithium ion - Purchased in 2007
Rating:

Strengths: this is the most used tool in my arsenal.the kit included a cordless drill, impact driver(my favorite!), flashlight, charger and 2 batteries for $250.00 on Amazon.com. I use the impact driver for everything! this driver will put a 10" lag bolt through a 6 x 6 without hesitation!the power is unbelievable!

Weaknesses: none

What You Wanted to Know Before You Bought It: how much I would actually use it!

What Would You Tell the Maker of This Tool: make a right angle impact driver for those tough to get to spots!

Strengths: This cordless drill was part of a combo kit that also includes a circular saw, a charger and a flashlight. All of the tools are well made and have served me satisfactorily. Strengths have been their durability and reliability.

Weaknesses: The one downside is that the batteries gradually became weaker, and eventually stopped retaining a charge. The cost of replacement batteries was also very high, which made me think twice before paying 50% the cost of the entire original kit just to replace the two batteries.

I visited the local Home Depot seeking batteries and learned that their giant "Ridgid" cordless toolset came not only with a full complement of cordless tools (drill, driver, circ saw, recip saw, flashlight, and charger), but also a lifetime warranty THAT INCLUDED THE BATTERIES! That was sufficient to get me moving....I purchased the new set and never looked back. :-)

What You Wanted to Know Before You Bought It: How long the batteries would last, and how expensive they'd be to replace.

What Would You Tell the Maker of This Tool: I'd suggest that they clone the Ridgid warranty that's lifetime and includes batteries! Also that they look at auto-shift feature that some others have decided to add.

Strengths: Light weight, compact size, tool hook, LED light for dark areas, very tough, great battery performance, Quick charge, hands down better than DEWALT!

Weaknesses: I have the set and the saws all has a tendency to not hold blades all the time.

What You Wanted to Know Before You Bought It: How tough they were! Contractor Grade.

What Would You Tell the Maker of This Tool: Magnetize the end of the tool to help hold screws etc.

Any - Purchased in 2000
Rating:

Strengths: I've used every size and voltage of makita cordless drill over the years, and I really can't think of a better brand for overall quality and features. Not that there aren't other good brands out there (Porter-Cable, Bosch), I've just been so pleased with my Makitas that I just can't bring myself to stray from the fold!

Weaknesses: You do have to follow the instructions for changing gears.

What You Wanted to Know Before You Bought It: Local retailers can't seem to stock all battery sizes.

What Would You Tell the Maker of This Tool: Sell them all with 3.0Ah capacity batteries included.

18VDC - Purchased in 2006
Rating:

Strengths: The 18VDC version of Makita's 12VDC impact driver is just as good a performer as the 12DC. A little heavier, but drives 5/16" X 4" lag bolts into studs with two fingers holding the drill.

Weaknesses: A little heavy and burns batteries faster than the 12VDC model

What You Wanted to Know Before You Bought It: No surprises.

What Would You Tell the Maker of This Tool: Make the light stay on a little longer. Offer 4.0 Ahr batteries... I know the weight gain is something, but battery technology is improving.
