Ask Community: Homeowners as General Contractors

I've often been approached by homeowners who want to be their own general contractor, but have no idea where to begin.

I usually reply with this example. If you needed surgery, would you want to work with a new doctor who had decided to get into the field of medicine, and had read some books to "get up to speed?" Would you want that doctor operating on you? How do you handle customers who want to be a little too involved in the process?
